Citizenship at birth in Trinidad and Tobago

Constitution s.17(1) makes every person born in Trinidad and Tobago a citizen at the date of birth, whatever the parents' nationality or status. s.17(2) excludes only children of accredited envoys where neither parent is a citizen, and of enemy aliens born in enemy-occupied territory.

Naturalization as the spouse of a citizen

A foreign spouse may register as a citizen.

Trinidad and Tobago citizenship through a parent or grandparent

A child of a Trinidad and Tobago parent is a citizen under the constitutional nationality framework. From the Constitution (Amendment) Act 6 of 2025 (proclaimed 10 October 2025), a person born outside Trinidad and Tobago is also a citizen where a parent or grandparent was a citizen at the date of that person's birth, including where that parent's or grandparent's own citizenship was by descent.

Adults generally need about 8 years lawful residence before ordinary naturalization, plus character, language or integration, and other statutory conditions. Grant is discretionary under the nationality law.
