Citizenship at birth through an Indonesian parent

A person born to an Indonesian citizen parent acquires Indonesian citizenship under Law No. 12 of 2006. Birth in Indonesia alone to two foreign parents is not general jus soli.

Citizenship through an Indonesian parent

A child acquires Indonesian citizenship when a parent is an Indonesian citizen under the lineage rules of Law No. 12 of 2006, including specified mixed-nationality and acknowledgment situations. Limited dual citizenship for children ends when the child must choose nationality at majority or marriage.

Naturalizationactive

Naturalization after five consecutive or ten intermittent years

A foreign adult (or married applicant) may request naturalization after residing in Indonesian territory for at least five consecutive years or at least ten years intermittently, with capacity, Indonesian language ability, acceptance of Pancasila and the Constitution, good health, no serious criminal conviction, livelihood, payment of the statutory fee, and no dual citizenship upon becoming Indonesian. Approval is discretionary at the presidential level after ministerial process.

estimated, not read from law โ€” The five-year consecutive floor is the ordinary continuous path; the ten-year intermittent alternative is statutory. Special contribution naturalization under Article 20 is exceptional and not modeled as CBI. Naturalization application fees are set by PNBP regulation rather than by Law 12/2006, and Government Regulation No. 30 of 2026 is reported to replace PP 45/2024 from 1 Aug 2026. The revised amounts are not recorded here: they appear only in secondary coverage and have not been read against the official schedule.
