Indian citizenship through an Indian parent

A child born abroad on or after 10 December 1992 with an Indian citizen parent is Indian by descent, but births from 3 December 2004 must be registered at an Indian consulate within one year, with an undertaking that the child holds no foreign passport (section 4).

Ordinary naturalization generally requires about twelve years residence (eleven of the prior fourteen plus twelve months immediately before applying), renunciation of prior nationality, and character conditions. Grant is discretionary.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)

Lifelong multiple-entry status for persons of Indian origin and eligible spouses: indefinite stay, stronger than a visa, weaker than nationality. Statutory path to citizenship after five years as OCI plus ordinary residence (Citizenship Act s.5(1)(g)). India bans dual citizenship โ€” taking Indian citizenship means renouncing the other. OCI benefits and compliance rules are adjusted periodically.
