Citizenship at birth through a Hungarian parent

A child acquires Hungarian citizenship at birth when at least one parent is a Hungarian citizen, regardless of the place of birth. Birth in Hungary alone to foreign parents is not general jus soli.

Preferential naturalization for a spouse after three years of residence and three years of marriage.

Citizenship through a Hungarian parent or simplified origin naturalization

A person is a Hungarian citizen at birth if a parent is a Hungarian citizen. Separately, simplified naturalization is available without a multi-year residence period for applicants who prove a Hungarian ancestor or Hungarian origin and demonstrate Hungarian language knowledge, or who meet the long marriage-to-Hungarian criteria.

Ordinary naturalization after continuous residence

Ordinary naturalization generally requires eight years of continuous residence in Hungary, clean criminal record, livelihood and housing, no public-security obstacle, and a constitutional exam in Hungarian, unless an exemption applies. Preferential shorter periods exist for spouses, parents of Hungarian minors and other statutory categories.
