Citizenship after eight years residence

Adults generally need eight years legal residence in Finland. Five years can suffice with the required language skills, a Finnish spouse, or statelessness. Dual nationality is generally allowed. Grant is discretionary. Applications submitted on or after 1 March 2027 also require sufficient knowledge of Finnish society (citizenship test, or a Finnish/Swedish matriculation exam or higher-education degree), after Citizenship Act amendments entering into force on 1 January 2027.
